Massive Fire Destroys Tomorrowland Mainstage Days Before Opening

A devastating fire broke out on the mainstage of Tomorrowland in Boom, Belgium, on July 16, 2025, just two days before the highly-anticipated festival finals were set to begin. Around 75% of the elaborate stage — constructed over nearly a year with a frosty “World of Orbyz” theme featuring ice-like structures and a giant lion centerpiece — was consumed by flames. The blaze erupted during evening preparations at approximately 6 p.m., when one of the stage’s pyrotechnic systems reportedly malfunctioned.

Emergency Response and Safety Measures

At the time of the incident, an estimated 1,000 staff members were on site preparing the festival grounds. Emergency services responded swiftly — deploying firefighters, police, and drones to monitor the fire from above and prevent its spread to nearby vegetation or tents. Police issued advisories for nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed due to thick smoke. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.

Global Impact on Festival Attendees

Tomorrowland, one of Europe’s largest electronic dance music festivals, draws around 400,000 attendees from more than 200 countries over two weekends. This year’s edition was scheduled for July 18–20 and 25–27, featuring over 200 artists, including headliners Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, Steve Aoki, Armin van Buuren, Fisher, Afrojack, Deadmau5 and more.

The destruction of the centerpiece stage threatens to disrupt the festival’s opening weekend and leaves its future uncertain. Organizers have not yet confirmed whether they can rebuild in time or reallocate performances to secondary stages.

Historical Fire Incidents at Tomorrowland

This is not the first major fire to impact Tomorrowland. In 2017, a blaze during Tomorrowland Unite in Barcelona led to the evacuation of over 22,000 attendees when a technical malfunction in the pyrotechnics caused roughly 25% of the stage to burn. Despite the severity of the incident, there were no serious injuries, and emergency evacuation procedures were deemed effective.

Economic Stakes and Technical Challenges

Tomorrowland is not only a cultural phenomenon but also a major economic motor for the region. In 2017, it generated approximately €100 million for the local economy and directly employed around 12,000 staff . That level of production involves highly complex stage builds, including advanced pyrotechnics, cranes, LED systems, and immersive audio-visual setups — all of which require rigorous safety protocols.

Rebuilding a fully thematic mainstage in just 48 hours is virtually impossible. This leaves organizers with limited options: delay the opening, reroute major acts to smaller stages, or potentially cancel parts of the festival — all of which come with significant logistical and financial consequences.

What Comes Next: Investigation & Possible Cancelation

Authorities are treating the scene as a high-risk incident. A formal investigation into the cause — most likely a pyrotechnic or fireworks malfunction — is already underway . Environmental and structural surveys will be required before any rebuilding or public reopening can occur. In addition, insurance reviews and safety certifications must be completed.

Festival organizers have said that their “top priority is safety” . However, with the clock ticking towards Friday, July 18, final decisions will depend on the speed of containment, investigation, and reassessment of the damaged stage’s integrity.
